Ice Storm! What Did You Do?

Hickman County was badly affected by this recent historic ice storm. This ice and snow storm took place the week of January 25th and the damage to Hickman County residents lasted for about two weeks. Many were without power and found life different for several days. After this harsh inclement weather, Colton Huntt and Adelynn Oakley were interviewed for their perspective without power.

Most of Hickman County was without power for almost a week, but Coach Huntt stated that he only lost power for a couple of hours Saturday and the majority of Sunday and that he and his wife, Rachel, were blessed to get power back before Sunday night before it got really cold.  Coach Huntt spent a lot of time with his five month old puppy, Tucker, playing fetch to pass the time. The worst part of this storm for him for the time he did not have electricity was not being able to cook. Only having a propane grill, he stated that “standing outside in this snowy weather was not the best grilling weather.” As Hickman County does not see snow much, Coach Huntt made sure to use it and have fun with it by driving his ranger around in the snow and ice with his wife and puppy. Having this ranger, they were able to go see family for some social interactions. Through this historic snowstorm, Coach Huntt’s realization was the importance of a generator for times such as this. He says that it also demonstrated  the importance of social interactions. This is important for him to maintain health and wellness.

Adelynn’s perspective on this snowstorm is a little different. She was without power for about a week, but she had a generator that powered lights, hot water, TV’s, and mostly everything else. To occupy herself while out of school, she stated that she played on her iPad and had her brother drive a four wheeler with her on a sled tied to the back. Adelynn stated that having to do chores around her farm to make sure her cows had drinking water was the worst part of not having electricity. During this outage, Adelynn has said that she realized she was very blessed to have a generator and that she was happy to be able to help others in need by letting them stay at her house. While this snowstorm caused major power outages, people found ways to enjoy this time out of school. What did you do with your time during the “ice” break?
