The golf season has finally swung around again, and the head of the program is a returning face: Jim Herron. He coached at East in the 2016 season. Now, he has returned, teaching driver’s ed in the morning and coaching golf in the afternoon.
When interviewed about his passion and history with golf, he spoke about how he was 13 when his father taught him how to golf and how he fell in love with the game. He played throughout high school and college. His inspiration to coach came from his father and other mentors who had asked him to pass the game down to younger generations.

Fun Fact: Herron has made two hole-in-ones in his golf career, one in 2019 and the other 39 years before that in 1980.
He also had several things to say about the current golf season. He said the summer was slower because of his late hiring, but he has seen significant progress in the team’s skills. He also still considers the team to be a work in progress but sees great things coming ahead. He also mentioned some of the new potential that came up in middle school, such as Brayden Moore, Ayden Huff, and Devan Bailey. Herron emphasized his team’s short-game skills around and on the green, which he puts the most focus on in his practices.
He also discussed the aggressive nature of his team’s competition this year, highlighting Fairview, Summertown, and Lewis County’s golf teams—he said their district is strong overall this year. As far as his goals for the team, he said he hopes some of his players will make it to regional.
Most importantly, when asked about planning to coach for the next couple of years, he responded with one word: “Absolutely.”
